Accessing Compass and Learning from Home

Compass allows you to access up-to-date and meaningful information about our school and your student’s progress. Compass includes many different features, including the ability to: Communicate with your student’s teachers and see what Learning Tasks the students are expected to do.

Using Compass allows you to access up-to-date and meaningful information about our school and your student’s progress. Compass includes many different features, including the ability to: 

Monitor your student’s attendance, and enter an explanation for absence or lateness
View your student’s timetable and the school calendar 
Communicate with your student’s teachers 
Update your family contact details 
Download and view your student’s semester reports
View and comment on your child's Learning Tasks


Compass is accessible on any modern web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari) via a desktop computer or mobile device. iOS and Android apps are also available (search for Compass School Manager in the App Store). Some of the features of Compass are only available in the ‘browser’ version e.g. booking interviews, viewing the School Calendar by week/month, accessing ‘School Documentation’ and Learning Task Rubrics. If however, you tap on the menu icon in the app, there is an option to ‘Open in Browser’.

To get the app, search for ‘Compass School Manager’. If you already have the app, make sure you have the current version - software on your device must also be current! 

 

TIPS:
We encourage parents to select 'Push Notifications when installing the Compass App. 

We encourage parents to access Compass daily to check the News Feed as this is our primary means of communication. 

 

‘Remember me’  

Make sure that the ‘Remember me’ box is checked when you first log into Compass via your browser and that ‘Remember’ is switched to ‘on’ when you login via the app so that you do not have to enter your Username and Password each time you access Compass.

 

Add Compass as a ‘Favorite’ in your browser or create a shortcut on your desktop  

Once you have accessed Compass (via the link on the Laverton P-12 College Website), add the address to ‘Favourites’ in your browser or right click and ‘create a shortcut’ on your desktop! 

 

Accessing the browser (full) version of Compass via the app  

You can access the full version of Compass on your phone, iPad etc., by tapping on the menu button (top left, three lines) in the app and selecting ‘Open in Browser’.

 

Absences  

Parent approvals for absences must be entered on the day of absence (early in the morning or ahead of time where possible) - there is no need to change the default times of 8am – 5pm when reporting full-day absences.  If you do not enter an attendance note advising us that your child will be late and your child arrives at school after 9.30am, you will receive an ‘Attendance Notification: Student Unaccounted For’ ‘sms’ asking you to enter an approval note on Compass.

Please note that this does NOT replace the above requirement to sign your child in via the Kiosk.  A record of absences can be viewed in the browser version of Compass by clicking the ‘Profile (Attendance, Schedule, Reports)’ link on the Home page and selecting the Attendance tab.  A record of absences can be viewed in the app by tapping on your child’s photo and selecting the “Approvals’ tab.

 

News Feed Items in the Compass app:

Make sure you tap on the item to reveal all of the information contained in the post!  'Priority Posts' are manually selected to stay at the top of the News Feed meaning they will not slip down the News Feed as other posts are added. This initiative keeps the posts you might need to action/refer back to at the top of the News Feed. Please ensure that you continue to scroll down the News Feed to read new posts that have been added. 

 

Notices Posted to the News Feed  

Copies of Compass News Items that you might need to refer back to can be found in Compass ‘School Documentation’ – Go to Community (People Icon) > School Documentation > Parents. 

 

Weekly/Monthly School Calendar (browser version only)  If you ‘hover’ over a calendar entry, more information is displayed e.g. venue.  Click on the colour-coded tab with your child’s name to hide/reveal time table information to make viewing of school events/activities clearer.  The calendar can be viewed by ‘week’ or ‘month’ – just click on your preference (top right of the screen). Items that appear at the top of the calendar are either 'all day' events or times are yet to be confirmed.  

The daily schedule can be viewed in the app by tapping on your child’s photo. 

 

Learning Tasks  

Ongoing feedback on your child’s Learning Tasks is made available via Compass throughout the year. Keep a lookout for an email from Compass that will be sent to you (with instructions) when feedback is available. 

A number of students were concerned that they didn't have computers with Microsoft Word on them.

The students do not need a device with the 'Word' program on them. They can log in to Google Drive using the USERNAME@schools.vic.edu.au and use 'Google Docs' (Blue Icon) or alternatively use Office 365.

Teachers could request students send them the link to their Google Docs or ask the kids to 'Download' the Google Doc as a PDF and attach that.
